Fine line between love and hate.

I only know of one group of professionals that are more disliked than people in advertising. And that’s lawyers. Ok, people don’t just dislike lawyers, they hate ‘em. But people in advertising come in a close second.
And I understand that. About lawyers I mean. If I, or someone I knew, was taken to the cleaners by some sleazy guy who cheated, lied and stole his way through law school then I’d be pissed too. But what has advertising ever done to you?
I mean, you can’t really believe all that rubbish Wilson Bryan Key spouted off back in the 70’s. You know, about subliminal brain-washing and hidden messages in ice cubes and all that. It’s a free country and people have free wills. If you buy something it’s because you want to, or at least someone you know wants you to.
And how many people really know someone working in advertising? Much less ones that say “Gee, buy that product, it’s great.” That is, during those few hours a day when they’re not working.
People talk about advertising all the time. They love it. How many times have you heard someone say, “Hey did you see that commercial about…” People just can’t get enough of it. Sure, my Granddad used to press the mute button on his remote control everytime there was a commercial break during a game, but we all know that he was something special.
People love advertising - but dislike ad people. Go figure.
But I think I know why. It’s because they aren’t working in advertising themselves. I mean, we have all the fun, get to go to all the cool parties and don’t have to wear a suit and tie to work. At least when the client’s not around. And that makes for a simple case of jealousy.
Oh well, like the old saying goes; if you can’t join ‘em, beat ‘em.
